Website redesigns are often driven by the desire to modernise a company’s digital presence. However, when technical SEO is overlooked during a redesign, the consequences can be severe. Years of accumulated search equity can disappear almost overnight.
This case study follows the recovery of CX Financia, a Cyprus-based financial and corporate services firm, whose website experienced a significant decline in organic visibility after a redesign introduced critical technical SEO issues.

Two years ago, CX Financia approached Go Digital Globally because they wanted to improve their SEO performance. At the time, our agency was operating at full capacity and we couldn’t immediately onboard another project. We asked them to wait until we had availability.
Back then, the website wasn’t perfect, but it had a solid SEO foundation. The content was original, written by humans, and search engines clearly understood the purpose of each service page. According to Google Search Console, the website generated approximately 428 organic clicks per month and over 20,000 impressions.
While waiting for us, the company decided to redesign the website to achieve a more modern appearance. Unfortunately, although the visual design improved, the redesign introduced several technical SEO issues that significantly reduced the site’s organic visibility.

Following the redesign, organic visibility declined dramatically:
The decline was not caused by market conditions or algorithm updates alone. A technical audit identified structural issues introduced during the redesign that affected Google’s ability to understand the website.
Between May and December 2024, organic clicks declined from 428 to 64 following a website redesign. A technical audit identified missing redirects, changes in content architecture, and service pages being converted into blog posts, resulting in indexing issues and keyword cannibalization. The recovery strategy focused on restoring the information architecture, correcting URL structures, implementing structured data, and rebuilding topical authority. Six months later, organic visibility had begun recovering, with impressions and clicks showing sustained growth.
The technical audit revealed several issues that directly affected the website’s ability to rank.
Existing URLs had been removed without implementing appropriate 301 redirects, causing search engines to lose historical page authority.
Commercial service pages had also been converted into blog posts. While this may have simplified content management, it fundamentally changed the search intent of the website. Pages designed to rank for commercial financial services were now competing within a blog structure intended for informational content.

For an international financial services company, these technical issues significantly reduced visibility in the markets that mattered most.
This case demonstrates why website design alone cannot guarantee sustainable organic growth. A visually appealing website cannot compensate for poor technical architecture. Following the redesign, search engines struggled to interpret the website because commercial services had been transformed into blog content, weakening topical relevance and changing the intended search intent of key landing pages. The result was Keyword Cannibalization, where multiple pages competed for the same search queries instead of strengthening the authority of the primary service pages.

Note: Google Search Console retains a limited historical reporting window. At the time this case study was prepared (15 July 2026), historical performance data was available from 14 March 2025 onwards. Earlier performance metrics presented in this case study (May 2024 and December 2024) were captured and archived as screenshots during the project and are included to document the website’s condition before and immediately after the redesign.
The recovery process required several months, as search engines need time to recrawl, reprocess, and rebuild trust following significant structural changes.
Following the implementation of the recovery strategy, Google gradually reprocessed the website’s architecture and content. Organic impressions began increasing first, followed by sustained growth in clicks and improved keyword visibility.
More importantly, the website once again aligned its information architecture with user intent, enabling search engines to understand the business correctly and surface the most relevant commercial pages for prospective clients.
This case demonstrates that recovering from a failed website redesign is possible—but only when the underlying technical issues are systematically identified and resolved.
